To ring in the New Year, allow me to bring you Inspo’s Soundtrack from 2016: A Year of Growth: a musical round-up to the key takeaways from Inspo’s 2016 to take into 2017. *
When people spoke of their career ambitions during coaching sessions, they did so with a brilliant energy. Achievable actions always emerged to allow people to improve their connection to their career. And to strengthen the voice they feel their career can give to their own personal ambitions.
Two key takeaways frequently emerged from these coaching sessions:
- It’s great to take steps, big or small, to evolve your career path in the way you want.
- We all should take a step back and evaluate our own careers more often than we do.

One recurring takeaway from people I observed growing in their career in 2016 is in a common trait they share. There is a real freedom of expression to how they go about their work. They have developed a mindset where they embrace every aspect of themselves-good or tilted. They are very authentic in their business dealings as a consequence. It allows an uninhibited creativity to permeate through their work. In addition, it also makes people, teammates, clients, patients etc. gravitate towards them.
All this allows them to be really positive contributors to innovation, team building, relationship building and winning work.
The single biggest takeaway from businesses I’ve seen succeed in 2016 bear similarities to what you see in the Argentinian rugby team in this short clip. These businesses have built a vision that staff feel personally invested in. It excites staff as much as it does leadership-usually because staff have been given the opportunity to input into the vision.
This creates a platform from which the staff of these businesses are achieving individual and collective high performance. And producing results for the business that outperform competitors.

The most popular Inspo blog post in 2016 was Gratitude. We often lament what our career does not give us. And yet, work gives us reasons to be grateful daily. They just too often go unappreciated. On my cycles home from work in the evenings, my eye is often caught by the night sky, dotted with stars. It’s a simple pleasure, but a lovely sight. When I manage to catch it.
The big takeaway for the year ahead is to make sure that we catch the moments of pleasure in work every time they happen. And that we take the time to appreciate and enjoy them.
